In early 2005 Mariyam and Shejea Khan decided to launch a Plainfield-based tutoring service called Career Zones. Using their fathers valuable guidelines and their previously acquired tutoring experience, the two applied the quality and management tools they were learning at the Kelley School of Business to start a business of their own.
Both the sisters graduated from the Plainfield school system with Honor diplomas. Having taken several Advance Placement (AP) courses and being inducted into the National Honor Society, the two place their teaching capabilities on sound academic footing. Arishaa Khan, an Honor Roll senior at Plainfield High School and the third of the Khan Sisters, has now also joined this new and exciting venture.
The Khans own one of the top 5 tutoring services in Karachi, Pakistan, called the Career Coaching Center. Since their years in high school the sisters have also been gaining tutoring experience by partnering with an international tutoring franchise.
Starting June 9, 2008, Career Zones will begin a new phase of its distance learning program by offering online tutoring. This program is based on a need-based, self-paced tutoring method. Supported by McGraw Hill, the service will provide online lessons for children in their homes. The online tutoring program is a great learning opportunity for non-traditional home-schooled students or traditional students wanting to study from the comfort of their homes.
Initially all students have to appear for a diagnostic test to identify their strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The tutoring center will review the results and contact students to discuss with them their placement and areas where remedial exercises will be beneficial. The students can start the distance learning program immediately after the diagnostic testing. The lessons are automatically generated as the student is taking the test, and are structured to give students practice in areas of weakness. The tutors and administrators will be able to monitor each students progress and send bi-monthly progress reports to the parents.
Students can join the on-site tutoring programs at their Plainfield location. Career Zones offers their students two types of tutoring: a passkey educational system from McGraw Hill or individual tutoring. Depending on the number of subjects being taken, a student will need to attend the tutoring center anywhere from 2-4 hours a week.
